The Generic Pharmaceutical Association has adopted a new brand meant to call attention to the affordability of generic medicines compared to their name-brand counterparts.
The new name—the Association for Accessible Medicines—was unveiled Tuesday along with the announcement of a new public relations campaign that will share "the story of patients whose health and lives are improved by access to generic medicines," the association said.
"The association's new identity will improve recognition that the generic and biosimilar medicines industry is one of the nation's great health care success stories, and that competition from generics and biosimilars lowers the cost of medicine," AAM CEO Chip Davis said. "Our medicines drive savings, not costs, and we stand ready to work with the president, Congress, patient groups and others to create real and lasting health cost solutions."
Many political leaders—including President Donald Trump—have criticized the pharmaceutical industry in recent years for failing to hold down the cost of some medications. Among the companies that have come under scrutiny in Mylan Pharmaceuticals, which increased the price of EpiPens by nearly 500 percent over a roughly seven-year period. Mylan CEO Heather Bresch was chairman of AAM's board of directors last year but recently transitioned out of the role. Jeff Watson, president of global generics at Apotex, is now chairman.
The political backlash against the pharmaceutical industry recently led Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America to launch what could be the most expensive PR campaign in the group's history. AAM did not disclose what resources the association is investing in its own campaign.
AAM has redesigned its main website as a result of the rebranding: accessiblemeds.org
